Caretakers Observations

General Comments: Pamzig was a 12 year old thoroughbred broodmare who sustained a carpal crush injury in May of 2000. Complications including these cast sores precluded metal implants and a surgical carpal arthrodecis. She was maintained at Cornell University in numerous casts in hopes that the knee would ankylose on its own. She arrived home on September 1st in a plastic bi-valve splint.
I followed Cornell's recommendation of a betadine wash and Silvadene wrap under her splint. After 3 weeks of this treatment, I was frustrated at her progress. Dr. Mort of Rhinebeck Equine had heard of your new product and your contest and suggested I give it a try.

The photographs document the 10 weeks that I cared for Pamzig.

Date Notes

9/26/00 One large cast sore over accessory carpal bone and one smaller sore located more laterally, only a thin strip of flesh between them. Wound is protruding beyond skin by more than ¼ inch, making it difficult to reset the custom designed splint.

9/29/00 Thickness of wound decreased to about 1/8 inch thick. Bottom edge of large sore and top edge of small sore shows healing. Note: Medicated baby powder is not used on the wound, only above and below it to help alleviate itching and excess moisture under the splint.
10/2/00 Area between sores seems to be increasing and the top of the small wound seems to be healing rapidly.

10/5/00 Wounds continue to stay warm and moist. Some bleeding after I rinsed it with warm water. I think the top of the large sore is closing in some.

10/9/00 Slight bleeding after it was rinsed. Can observe improvements daily

10/15/00 Continued improvement.

10/17/00 Bottom of the large wound is healing fast. Realization that hair is filling in black!!

10/23/00 Small wound is completely flush with skin. Large wound is moist and has great blood flow, although it still protrudes beyond the skin.

10/26/00 Both wounds are red with vascularity. Large wound is about the size of a ½ dollar.

11/1/00 Continued improvement

11/7/00 Fleshy part of the large wound is approximately the size of a quarter. Small wound is smaller than the size of a dime.

11/16/00 Fleshy part of the large wound is only slightly larger than a dime. There is no longer any fleshy part on the small wound, only skin coverage.

11/25/00 Large wound is smaller than a dime. Hair is continuing to close inward.

11/28/00 Continued improvement. Wound is so much smaller everyday.
