III b – Control of bacterial proliferation

The lower infection rate of the moist wound dressing is due to the acidic environment that develops beneath it.
4 This type of environment has been shown to inhibit the growth of two common bacterial strains ( = bacteriostatic effect) : Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The lower infection rate may also be due to the great number of leukocytes found under the dressing. 4,9,12

Their presence may keep the number of organisms low enough so there is only a colonization of organisms, not enough to cause an infection.

Important data:

In addition to the bacteriostatic effect with the use of a « standard » moist wound dressing (bacteriostatic = inhibition of the growth of bacteria without destruction)
Derma GeL® is bactericidal ( = destruction of bacteria) on different bacterial strains : Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger 18.
