An
important difference between the conventional method and hydrogel
dressings is the perceived pain from the wound.
Hydrogel dressings protect nerve endings from the environment and
keep them moist - literally bathed in a moist soothing environment
-, helping to reduce pain.
With gauze dressings, nerves may be damaged during changes; however,
hydrogel dressings do not damage the underlying new surface when
removed.
Nemeth et al 15 and others 5-7,13 have demonstrated that subjects
treated with hydrogel dressings had less pain than those treated
with gauze and/or topical ointments, creams. ..
