Effect of an isotonic solution on Red Blood Cells (RBC’s)
Effect of a hypertonic solution on Red Blood Cells (RBC’s)
After

Group of RBC’s after treatment with an isotonic solution (0.9% Sodium Chloride).
Based on these results, we can conclude that the diffusion of water in and out of the erythrocytes is at equilibrium.
After

Group of RBC’s after treatment with a with 3% solution of Sodium Chloride (hypertonic solution).
The fluid content inside RBC’s moves from inside the cells to the surrounding medium. The shrinkage effect on these cells is called crenation. Crenation can lead to healing disorders.
