ALD & Hotspots - 1

WHAT IS ALD ?

Acral lick dermatitis (ALD), also known as lick granuloma or canine neurodermatitis is a stereotypic behavior resulting in self-mutilation.

WHAT IS HOTSPOTS (Pyoderma)?

This is often a chronic condition , secondary to other disorders such as immune deficiencies and various allergic conditions. Staphylococci bacteria are often seen in surface pyodermas.

WHAT CAUSES ALD ?

behavioural disorder – stress – bacterial or fungal infections – neoplasia – skin trauma – allergies – lack of sufficient exercise – overfeeding - inappropriate diet - use of irritant/sensitizing products.

It is largely agreed that ALD is a behavioral disorder with many possible origins. The self-licking and chewing acts as a release of tension. It may also be initiated by bacterial or fungal infections, neoplasia, skin trauma, foreign body and allergies which may cause similar symptoms.

Furthermore - overfeeding, inappropriate diet or a lack of sufficient exercise may also induce ALD.
In order to determine the right cause, bacterial cultures, histological examinations or other laboratory tests are needed.
