ALD & Hotspots - 2

IMPORTANT OBSERVATIONS

The use of irritant/sensitizing or mutagenic/cytogentoxic topical products presumed to cure ALD appears to increase it dramatically. In fact, they are creating stress at skin level - resulting in inflammation and pruritus (itching) which triggers the dog's propensity to lick.

TREATMENT (Topical product + oral administration drug treatment)

As long as there is no abnormal cell proliferation (fungal invasion…) and as used as recommended by the manufacturer, Veterinus Derma GeL® (www.derma-gel.com) has been shown extremely effective (application 2-3 times/day) in conjunction (for extreme cases) with mood-altering drugs (during +/- 4 weeks) like Prozac, Naltrexone etc.

Remark:

In some cases, long term antibiotic oral administration treatment (+/- 1 to 2 months) may be required when skin is deeply affected -- because at the base layer of the skin there can be found under the microscope little pockets of bacteria, broken hair follicles, plugged and scarred oil glands and dilated and inflamed capillaries.
