How
to use Veterinus Derma GeL® on these skin conditions?
Initial
cleansing (Day 1):
Many veterinarians believe that although the addition of antimicrobials
to lavage solutions is beneficial, much of the benefit is the
lavage action itself. Copious lavage of a contaminated wound with
water (more specifically, sterile physiologic saline or another
sterile balanced solution) alone is of great benefit.
It has also been demonstrated that regardless of lavage solution
used, lavages are more effective at flushing away bacteria and
contaminants if applied by pressure.
A pressure of at least 7 psi is desired.
This pressure can be generated by a plastic spray bottle on the
"stream setting," a 60 ml syringe with an 18 gauge needle
on the end, or a dental "water-pik."
In conjunction with lavage, mechanical debridement is beneficial
in aiding the removal of bacteria and foreign material or micro-debris.
Daily cleansing (Day 2
): Daily cleanse with saline
solution.
Daily Application: Apply Veterinus Derma GeL® generously
(thick layer of +/- 4mm) twice a day, extending application to
the surrounding area.
Important:
Although Veterinus Derma GeL® provides a protective
barrier, - in certain extreme cases or depending on the location
- it is however recommended to cover the gel with a non woven
and non adhesive secondary dressing + a bandage during the first
days. Afterwards, the gel can be left uncovered because after
its application and superficial drying, Veterinus Derma GeL®
is composed of two layers, the external layer (protective film)
made of dried polysaccharides together with acrylic acid-based
polymers (semi-occlusive) and the inner layer primarily made of
hydrophilic particles.
This combination absorbs the exudate from the wound, forming a
soft moist mass which creates an optimal moist environment for
healing speeding epithelialization and protecting wound
from foreign contaminants.
